This video is dedicated to my great friends, and Joyce aficionado's Jean and Derry O'Sullivan.
Even before James Joyce’s Ulysses was published it was causing trouble. Short excerpts appeared in a review magazine, and the US postal service claiming it was pornography refused to deliver the magazines and then burnt all the copies.
Any publisher that thought about publishing Ulysses had to weigh up the possibility of being prosecuted for obscenity against the potential of bringing a masterpiece into the world. Most publishers wouldn’t touch it, but Sylvia Beach, owner of the Shakespeare and...

Ulysses, James Joyce
First edition, first printing, number 233 of 150 large paper copies numbered between 101 and 250. Ulysses was published in imitation of the traditional three-tiered French format aimed at both connoisseurs and readers: 100 copies were printed on Dutch handmade paper and signed by Joyce; 150 copies were printed on heavier vergé d’Arches to create this large paper format; and the remaining 750 copies formed a small format trade issue, printed on less expensive vergé à barbes stock. James Joyce Ulysses, first edition 1/100 copies signed
Pom Harrington inspects our superior copy of Ulysses.
This book is a first edition, primary issue, one of 100 copies on Dutch handmade paper; this copy numbered 45 and signed by Joyce on the limitation page.
The first printing of Ulysses consisted of 1,000 copies, divided into three issues. The first 100 were designated the primary issue: printed on fine Dutch handmade paper, numbered 1–100 and signed by Joyce, these copies bulk thickest of the three issues and were the most expensive, at 350 francs ($30).
Of the remainder, 150 unsigned copies were done on larger but inferior paper, and the remaining 750 on linen paper, noticeably thinner and slightly smaller than the Dutch paper issue.

Any publisher that thought about publishing Ulysses had to weigh up the possibility of being prosecuted for obscenity against the potential of bringing a masterpiece into the world. Most publishers wouldn’t touch it, but Sylvia Beach, owner of the Shakespeare and Co. bookshop in Paris, decided the risk was worth taking, and in 1922 Ulysses was published in Paris.
It is famously hard to read, and many never finish it, but the novel would go on to triumph over the criticism and censorship, to become one of the most highly regarded works of art in the 20th century.
Nothing much happens in Ulysses, two men wander around Dublin, and a woman lies in bed thinking, that’s it! But it is the story telling, the language and the humour that makes it a work of genius.

Bought by C. E. Fritze Hofbokhandel and bound for the bookseller by Östermalms bokbinderi, this copy was recorded in Sylvia Beach’s notebook as having been sent on 24 May 1922. As such, it is the first Ulysses to be imported to Sweden; copies of the work were generally hard to find in Scandinavia throughout the 1920s and 1930s (Riikonen, “Blooms in the North”, in The Reception of James Joyce in Europe, p. 130).

Why We've Only Ever Seen the Sun's Poles Once
The Ulysses mission revolutionized our understanding of the sun, but it's been the only orbiter to take this kind of out-of-ecliptic journey. Will an upcoming mission give us even more?

1990: STS-41 Discovery, Ulysses (NASA/ESA)
The Ulysses Mission was a joint undertaking between the European Space Agency (ESA) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Its goal was the exploration of the Sun's environment far out of the ecliptic plane. Ulysses is the only spacecraft to have visited this unique region over the northern and southern poles of the Sun.
Launched on 6 October 1990 as part of Space Shuttle mission STS-41, Ulysses completed over 17¾ years of continuous operations.

NASAFLIX - ULYSSES: Looking Inside the Sun - MOVIE
NASA and the European Space Agency joined forces to send the space probe Ulysses to study the heliosphere - the region of space influenced by the Sun and its magnetic field - from a unique polar orbit. The spacecraft's 10 instruments on board measured the Sun's fields and particles, ultraviolet, X-rays, gamma rays and solar wind.

The Ulysses Legacy: Observing the Sun for 17 years
The ESA/NASA Ulysses mission has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of the Sun and our local interstellar neighbourhood. What is Ulysses (spacecraft)?
Ulysses ( yoo-LISS-eez, UK also YOO-liss-eez) was a robotic space probe whose primary mission was to orbit the Sun and study it at all latitudes. It was launched in 1990 and made three "fast latitude scans" of the Sun in 1994/1995, 2000/2001, and 2007/2008

The ESA/NASA Ulysses mission has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of the Sun and our local interstellar neighbourhood. Ulysses was designed to last for five years but the mission was extended four times, allowing Ulysses to pass over the Sun's poles for a second and third time, and spending more than 18 years in space.
